Supervision, direction or control: Taking compliance to the next level

  • Blog

Here at ADVANCE we’re proud of our expertise in supervision, direction or control (SDC).

Now we’ve strengthened our credentials in this area even further by undergoing independent quarterly reviews of our SDC process.

The quarterly reviews, conducted by tax experts at EY, are distinct from and in addition to annual Freelancer & Contractor Services Association (FCSA) compliance audits.

They analyse our approach to SDC in both umbrella and self-employment, assessing compliance with HMRC rules and identifying areas for improvement.

Supervision, direction or control: our unique position in the industry

ADVANCE managing director Shaun Critchley said:

We operate market-leading processes in order to remain compliant with HMRC rules on SDC.

To help us keep up to date with latest best practice, we are now reviewed on a quarterly basis by our tax advisors.

These reviews add another layer to our already rigorous approach to SDC.

They will give our agency partners, their contractors and clients an extra degree of comfort that we are doing everything by the book.

I believe this step puts us in a unique position in the industry and reinforces our position as the market leader in SDC.

Did you know?

Founded in 2010 and based in Chester, we are the only provider with FCSA accreditation for umbrella, limited and self-employment solutions.

Our umbrella solution enables contractors who are not subject to supervision, direction or control to be reimbursed for variable mileage plus fixed subsistence, non-mileage travel and accommodation expenses.

Since April 2016, SDC has been the key test for determining travel & subsistence (T&S) expenses eligibility for contractors who are employed by an umbrella company.

Two years prior to that, in April 2014, it became the key status test in self-employment with the passing of the onshore employment intermediaries / false self-employment legislation.
